Let’s be honest: perfection is overrated. This workshop is all about throwing out the rulebook and leaning into the wonderfully weird. Come join us for a fun, totally playful session where we’ll be using hand-building techniques to bring your very own quirky clay creatures to life.
Whether they turn out silly, cute, or completely bizarre, that’s entirely up to you. This is the perfect excuse to gather your friends, family, or just bring yourself and get a little messy. There are no mistakes here – just personality.
What to expect:
-
The creature blueprint: We’ll start by showing you the fundamental hand-building methods to get your monster started. Then, the reins are yours. Want five eyes? A gaping toothy grin? Spikes, wings, or fur textures? We’ll show you exactly how to attach them so they don’t fall off in the kiln.
-
Experimentation encouraged: This class is a judgment-free zone. It’s all about experimenting, playing around, and seeing where the clay takes you.
-
The transformation: After you’ve given your creature its unique personality, they’ll stay behind with us. We’ll dry, professionally glaze, and fire them in our kiln. It takes about 2 to 6 weeks for your monster to undergo its final transformation, and we’ll shout the second they’re ready to be adopted and taken home.
Come with an open mind, leave with a little clay friend that is uniquely, hilariously yours.
The Game Plan
1. The Welcome & Intro
We’ll kick things off by settling in with some refreshments. We’ll show you a few finished clay creatures to inspire you, ranging from the incredibly cute to the delightfully weird and quickly run through the (boring-but-important) logistics of how the glazing and firing process works.
2. The Demo
Before you start bringing your creature to life, we’ll show you the ropes. We’ll demonstrate some handy hand-building techniques to create the body, and show you the secret to attaching eyes, horns, teeth, or wings so they don’t pop off in the kiln (a magical technique called “scoring and slipping”). We’ll also show you how to use different tools to create fun textures like fur, scales, or wrinkles.
3. The Making Part
This is where your imagination takes over. You’ll get straight to sculpting your monster while we wander around to help, offer ideas, or rescue any collapsing limbs. Before your creature goes into hiding, you’ll stamp your name on the base, we’ll snap a photo of it for our records, and grab your details so we can text you when it’s ready for adoption.
