Need a Cuppa?

If you love your morning tea or coffee (or just love a cozy, handmade mug in your collection), this one is for you. Come join us for a relaxed workshop where we’ll be hand-building our very own ceramic mugs—the ultimate personalised vessel for your favourite hot drink.

No pottery experience? None needed at all. We’re going to play around with a few different methods, like slab-building and pinch-potting, to figure out whichever technique feels best in your hands. It’s a completely judgment-free space to try something new, sip a hot drink, and unwind.

What to expect:

  • The playbook: We’ll demonstrate each stage of the process before you dive in. You’ll learn how to roll smooth clay slabs, form the body of your mug, securely attach handles, and smooth out the rim for comfortable sipping.

  • Make it yours: Once the structure is built, the fun begins. Keep it minimalist and sleek, or personalise it with carved textures, impressed foliage, stamped phrases, or custom handle designs. We’re right there to help you bring your ideas to life.

  • The final bake: After you’ve finished sculpting, leave it with us. We will dry, glaze with food-safe glazes, and kiln-fire your mug. It takes about 2 to 6 weeks to do our part, and we’ll shout the second it’s ready for your first official cuppa.

Come on in, learn a new skill, and leave with a beautiful mug you’ll actually use every single morning.

If you need to cancel or change the date of your booking, we require 48 hours notice. If you do not provide 48 hours notice we will not be able to offer to reschedule or refund your session.

The Game Plan

1. The Welcome & Intro

We’ll kick things off by settling in with a warm cuppa and some refreshments. We’ll show you a few finished ceramic mugs to help you picture the size and shape you want, and quickly run through the boring-but-important logistics of how the glazing and firing process works.

2. The Demo

Before you touch a piece of clay, we’ll show you exactly how it’s done. We’ll demonstrate a few different hand-building methods; like wrapping clay slabs around cylinders, pulling or shaping comfortable handles, and the secret technique (“score and slip”) to attach handles so they never snap off.

3. The Making Part

This is where you take over. You’ll get straight to building your mug using whichever technique feels best in your hands, while we wander around to help, offer tips, or rescue any wobbly walls. Once you’ve added your personal textures, handle, and finishing touches, you’ll stamp your name on your masterpiece, we’ll snap a photo for our records, and grab your details so we can text you when it’s ready.

The Nitty-Gritty

  • Time: 1.5 hours of relaxed making, sipping, and chatting.

  • Group Size: Small groups of up to 8. A bit of focus goes a long way with these techniques, making it perfect for grown-ups and older teens looking to build their clay skills.

  • Cost: £35 per person (refreshments included; postage of fired item extra if wanted).

  • Got questions? Drop us a line at workshop@kiln.cafe, we’re happy to chat.
